Driving
There are
two routes to Monterey by car, both very scenic. Highway One, which runs from
San Francisco to Los Angeles, offers breathtaking views of the Pacific
coastline and has been called the top road trip in America by many sources.
Highway 101 runs down the valley corridor and affords the motorist an
opportunity to see the rich land that has made the Salinas Valley "the
Salad Bowl of the World." The fastest is 101 South to 156 West
(near Prunedale) to Hwy 1 South. This route is about 120 miles and takes roughly
two hours. The longest,
yet most scenic route is Hwy 1 all the way from San Francisco. It is also about
120 miles, but the roads can be slow. Allow at least three hours for this
journey.
